Title: “A Straw Argument” - Oil on 30x40 Stretched Canvas

This piece serves as a significant statement that I created for the annual H2O Show at CityArts Orlando. To my great delight, this painting was awarded first place in the juried exhibition.

The primary message I aimed to communicate through this artwork pertains to the pressing issue of pollution, particularly the impact of single-use plastics. In this context, I utilized the commonplace straw as a metaphor for all forms of anthropogenic pollution and its detrimental effects on our waterways and oceans. The depiction of turtles and various marine creatures with straws in their mouths was intended to provoke a strong emotional response and raise awareness of this critical issue.

It is estimated that approximately 8.3 billion plastic straws contribute to the pollution of the world's coastlines, placing them among the top ten sources of plastic marine debris globally. In the United States alone, around 500 million plastic straws are utilized each day, significantly exacerbating ocean pollution.
